English:
…that Allah, who created the heavens and the earth…

Brief note:
The completion of the heavens and the earth and all their host is affirmed across the traditions as the finished work of the one Creator.

Illumination note
The six days of creative speech and action now stand complete. The heavens, the earth, and all their host are finished. The work is done. Three witnesses testify: the creation is brought to its appointed fullness by the word of God;1.

2:1 And on the seventh day God finished His work that He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had done.

English:
And We did certainly create the heavens and earth and what is between them in six days, and there touched Us no weariness.

Brief note:
God’s rest on the seventh day after finishing His work is paralleled in the Quran’s affirmation that the creation of the heavens and earth in six days brought no weariness to the Creator.

Illumination note
On the seventh day the work is finished and God rests — not from exhaustion, but in the satisfaction of completed purpose. The Gospel later draws deeply on this rest. The Quran emphasizes that the six-day creation brought no fatigue to the Maker. Three witnesses declare the same truth: the work is complete, the seventh day is set apart, and the Creator enters His rest.

2:3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all His work that He had done in creation.

Quran

English:
…then He established Himself above the Throne…Brief note:
The blessing and sanctifying of the seventh day after the completion of creation resonates with the Quran’s description of the Creator establishing Himself above the Throne once the work of the heavens and earth was finished.

Illumination note
The seventh day receives a double distinction: God blesses it and makes it holy. The reason is clear — on that day He rested from all the work of creation. The Gospel later reveals the Son of Man as Lord of the Sabbath. The Quran points to the Creator’s establishment above the Throne after the six days. Three witnesses affirm the same sacred truth: the seventh day is set apart by the One who finished His work.

2:4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.

English:
And We did not create the heaven and earth and that between them in play.

Brief note:
The opening of the “generations of the heavens and the earth” under the name LORD God aligns with the Quran’s affirmation that the creation of the heavens and earth was purposeful, not in play.

Illumination note
A new section begins. The broad six-day account now gives way to the detailed “generations” (toledot) of the heavens and the earth. For the first time the sacred name יְהוָה is joined with אֱלֹהִים — the LORD God. The Gospel declares that all things were made through the Word. The Quran insists the creation was not in vain. Three witnesses stand at this threshold: the finished work now opens into a deeper telling of the same creative purpose.

2:5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground,

Quran
Surah Al-Hijr 15:19–20

English:
And the earth We have spread out and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing. And We have made for you therein means of living…

Brief note:
The picture of the land before rain and before man was present to cultivate it resonates with the Quran’s description of the earth being spread and prepared with provision for living creatures.

Illumination note
The narrative now slows and looks more closely at the condition of the land. No bush, no small plant had yet sprung up, because the LORD God had not sent rain and there was not yet a man to work the ground. Three witnesses stand at this quiet threshold: the earth waits, the rain is still held back, and the one who will cultivate it has not yet been formed.

2:6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground—

Quran
Surah Al-Mu’minun 23:18

English:
And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth…

Brief note:
The mist rising from the earth to water the ground anticipates the Quran’s description of water being sent down and settled in the earth in measured amounts.

Illumination note
Before rain falls from above, a mist rises from below and waters the whole face of the ground. The earth is being prepared. The Gospel later speaks of living water that wells up from within. The Quran points to water measured and settled in the earth. Three witnesses affirm the same quiet preparation: the ground is being made ready for the life that is about to be formed from it.

2:7 Then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

English:
…“I am creating a human being from clay… So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit…”

Brief note:
The LORD God forming man from the dust and breathing into him the breath of life finds a strong parallel in the Quran’s account of Allah creating man from clay and breathing into him of His spirit.

Illumination note
Here is the intimate moment of humanity’s origin. The LORD God forms the man from the dust of the ground, then bends close and breathes into his nostrils the breath of life. Dust becomes a living soul. The Gospel later shows the risen Jesus breathing on His disciples. The Quran recounts the same sacred act of divine breath. Three witnesses stand in holy silence: the man is formed, the breath of God enters him, and life begins

2:8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there He put the man whom He had formed.

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:35

English:
And We said, “O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise…”

Brief note:
The planting of the garden in Eden and the placing of the man there is reflected in the Quran’s account of Adam being told to dwell in the Garden (Jannah).

Illumination note
Immediately after forming the man, the LORD God prepares a place for him — a garden planted in Eden toward the east. The man is not left in the open field; he is set in a prepared garden. The Gospel points forward to the paradise of God and the tree of life. The Quran recalls Adam being placed in the Garden. Three witnesses declare the same gracious act: the Creator forms the man and then places him in a garden of His own planting.

2:9 And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Hebrew

Quran
Surah Ta-Ha 20:120

English:
Then Satan whispered to him; he said, “O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?”

Brief note:
The two special trees in the midst of the garden — the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil — are echoed in the Quran’s reference to the tree that Satan presented to Adam as the tree of eternity.

Illumination note
From the same ground out of which the man was formed, the LORD God causes every beautiful and fruitful tree to spring up. In the very center of the garden stand two trees of unique significance: the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The Gospel looks forward to the tree of life in the paradise of God. The Quran recalls the tree that became the point of testing. Three witnesses stand before these two trees: one offers life, the other holds the knowledge of good and evil, and both are placed by the Creator’s deliberate hand.

2:10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers.

Gospel
Revelation 22:1

English:
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

Quran
Surah Muhammad 47:15

English:
…rivers of water unaltered…

Brief note:
The river flowing out of Eden to water the garden, then dividing into four, anticipates the Quran’s descriptions of the rivers of paradise and the Gospel’s vision of the river of the water of life.

Illumination note
A single river rises in Eden to water the garden, then divides into four great streams that flow outward. Life-giving water moves from the center to the wider world. The Gospel later shows the river of the water of life flowing from the throne. The Quran describes the pure rivers of paradise. Three witnesses point to the same reality: from the place of God’s presence, living water goes forth to nourish and to spread.

2:11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.

English:
…and therein is whatever the souls desire and [what] delights the eyes…

Brief note:
The river Pishon flowing around the land of Havilah where there is gold points toward the abundance and beauty that the Quran describes in paradise and that the Gospel later shows in the New Jerusalem of pure gold.

Illumination note
The first of the four rivers is named: Pishon. It winds through the whole land of Havilah, a place noted for its gold. Already the text begins to describe the richness of the lands watered by the river that flows from Eden. Three witnesses sense the same generosity: the river carries life outward, and the lands it touches are marked by precious things.

2:12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there.

…They will be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a pure drink.

Brief note:
The good gold, bdellium, and onyx of the land of Havilah anticipate the precious stones and adornments described in both the Gospel’s vision of the New Jerusalem and the Quran’s descriptions of the rewards of paradise.Illumination note
The text pauses to emphasize the quality of the gold — it is good — and to name two other treasures found there: bdellium and onyx stone. The lands reached by the river of Eden are already rich with beauty and value. Three witnesses recognize the same pattern: from the garden’s river flow not only water but also the signs of precious provision that will later appear in the final paradise.

2:13 The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush.

Quran
Surah Ar-Rahman 55:50

English:
In both of them are two springs, flowing.

Brief note:
The second river, Gihon, flowing around the land of Cush continues the pattern of life-giving waters going out from Eden, a theme later reflected in the flowing springs and rivers of paradise described in the Quran and the river of life in the Gospel.

Illumination note
The second river is named Gihon. It encircles the whole land of Cush. From the single river of Eden the waters continue to branch outward, carrying life into distant regions. Three witnesses recognize the same movement: the water that begins in the garden does not remain confined; it goes forth to the wider world.

2:14 And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

English:
Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered…

Brief note:
The third and fourth rivers — the Tigris and the Euphrates — complete the fourfold branching of the river from Eden, a pattern that later appears in the Quran’s rivers of paradise and is remembered in the Gospel’s references to the great river Euphrates.

Illumination note
The third river is the Tigris, flowing east of Assyria. The fourth is the Euphrates. With these two names the picture is complete: one river from Eden becomes four, carrying water, life, and the memory of the garden into the wider earth. Three witnesses stand at the same rivers: the waters that begin in God’s garden continue to flow through history and point forward to the final rivers of life.

2:15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

English:
And We said, “O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from it in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will…”Brief note:
The LORD God placing the man in the garden to work and keep it resonates with the Quran’s account of Adam being told to dwell in the Garden, and with the Gospel’s image of the Father as the vinedresser who tends the true vine.

Illumination note
The man is not left idle. The LORD God takes him and settles him in the garden with a clear purpose: to work it and to keep it. Cultivation and guardianship are given together. The Gospel later reveals the Father as the vinedresser of the true vine. The Quran recalls Adam being placed in the Garden to dwell and eat freely. Three witnesses affirm the same calling: humanity is placed in the garden under the Creator’s care, with work and stewardship entrusted to him.

English:
…and eat from it in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will, but do not approach this tree…

Brief note:
The open permission to eat of every tree of the garden (with the restriction yet to come) is mirrored in the Quran’s invitation to eat freely in the Garden, while also warning of the one tree not to approach.

Illumination note
Before any restriction is spoken, the LORD God gives a wide and generous command: of every tree of the garden the man may freely and abundantly eat. The permission is full and emphatic. The Gospel later teaches that true life comes from every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. The Quran recalls the abundant permission given in the Garden alongside the clear boundary. Three witnesses stand at this moment: the garden is full of provision, the command is generous, and the Creator’s word is the source of life.

English:
…but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.

Brief note:
The prohibition against eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, with the warning of death, is paralleled in the Quran’s command not to approach the tree, lest Adam and his wife become among the wrongdoers.

Illumination note
Against the wide permission of every tree stands one clear boundary: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The consequence is stated with solemn emphasis — “you shall surely die.” The Gospel later names death as the wages of sin, while pointing to the free gift of eternal life. The Quran records the same boundary and the warning against becoming wrongdoers. Three witnesses stand before the tree: the command is clear, the consequence is death, and the Creator’s word defines the boundary of life.

…who created you from one soul and created from it its mate…

Brief note:
The LORD God’s declaration that it is not good for the man to be alone, and His intention to make a suitable helper, is echoed in the Quran’s account of creating from one soul its mate, and in the Gospel’s profound mystery of the union of man and woman pointing to Christ and the Church.

Illumination note
For the first time in the creation account, something is declared “not good”: the man alone. The LORD God Himself speaks the need and announces the remedy — a helper corresponding to him. The Gospel later unfolds this union as a mystery pointing to Christ and the Church. The Quran affirms creation from one soul and the making of its mate. Three witnesses stand at this tender moment: solitude is not the final design, a corresponding helper is promised, and the Creator Himself moves to complete what is still lacking.

2:19 Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.

English:
And He taught Adam the names—all of them…Brief note:
The LORD God bringing the animals to the man to see what he would name them is closely paralleled in the Quran’s account of Allah teaching Adam all the names.

Illumination note
The LORD God forms the beasts and birds and brings them to the man, not merely to display them, but to see what the man would call them. Whatever the man names becomes the creature’s name. Authority of naming is entrusted to him. The Gospel later shows the Good Shepherd calling His own sheep by name. The Quran records that Adam was taught all the names. Three witnesses stand at this moment: the man is given the privilege of naming, the creatures receive their identities from his word, and the Creator watches what he will call them.

2:20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.

English:

After the man names all the animals and still no suitable helper is found, the text prepares for the creation of the woman — a theme echoed in the Quran’s account of creating the mate from the one soul so that he might dwell with her in security.

Illumination note
The man fulfills the task given to him: he names every livestock, bird, and beast. Yet among all the living creatures, none is found to be the helper corresponding to him. The search ends in absence. The Gospel later affirms the original design of male and female becoming one flesh. The Quran speaks of the mate created from the one soul for mutual dwelling. Three witnesses stand in the quiet after the naming: the animals have received their names, the helper has not yet appeared, and the Creator’s next act of intimate formation is about to unfold.

Brief note:
The LORD God causing a deep sleep and taking from the man’s side to form the woman is reflected in the Quran’s account of creating the mate from the one soul, and in the Gospel’s mystery of the two becoming one flesh as members of Christ’s body.

Illumination note
The LORD God causes a deep sleep to fall upon the man. While he sleeps, a rib (or side) is taken and the place is closed with flesh. The formation of the helper begins not from the dust of the ground, but from the man himself. The Gospel later speaks of the profound mystery of the two becoming one flesh and of the Church as members of Christ’s body. The Quran affirms creation of the mate from the one soul. Three witnesses stand in the quiet of the deep sleep: the man is opened, something is taken from him, and the Creator prepares to build what will complete him.

Brief note:
The building of the woman from the rib taken from the man, and her being brought to him, is echoed in the Quran’s purpose of the mate for mutual dwelling in security, and in the Gospel’s image of life flowing from the pierced side of Christ.
Illumination note
What was taken is now built. The LORD God makes the rib into a woman and brings her to the man. The helper is formed from the man and presented to him. The Gospel later shows life flowing from the pierced side of the Son. The Quran speaks of the mate created so that he might dwell with her in security. Three witnesses stand at this presentation: the woman is built from the man, she is brought to him, and the one who was alone is about to receive his corresponding helper.

English:
And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them…

Brief note:
The man’s recognition of the woman as bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh, and the naming of her as Woman because she was taken from Man, is echoed in the Quran’s sign of mates created from yourselves for mutual tranquillity, and in the Gospel’s call for husbands to love their wives as their own bodies.

Illumination note
The man speaks for the first time. Seeing the woman, he declares, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” He names her Woman because she was taken out of Man. Recognition and joy fill the moment. The Gospel later commands husbands to love their wives as their own bodies, as Christ loves the Church. The Quran points to mates created from yourselves so that you may find tranquillity in them. Three witnesses stand at this first human speech: the man recognizes his corresponding helper, he names her from his own being, and the design of mutual belonging is affirmed.

“…and the two shall become one flesh”? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.

Quran
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:187

English:
…They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them…Brief note:
The declaration that a man shall leave father and mother, hold fast to his wife, and become one flesh is affirmed in the Gospel as the original design that God joins and man must not separate, and is reflected in the Quran’s image of spouses as mutual clothing for one another.

Illumination note
From the man’s recognition flows a foundational principle: a man shall leave his father and mother, hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Leaving and cleaving establish a new unity. The Gospel later quotes this verse and adds that what God has joined, man must not separate. The Quran describes spouses as clothing for one another. Three witnesses declare the same sacred bond: the man leaves and holds fast, the two become one flesh, and the union is the work of the Creator.

2:25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Gospel
2 Corinthians 5:21

English:
For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

Quran
Surah Al-A’raf 7:20

English:
…and he got them out of what they were in…

Brief note:
The original nakedness without shame in the garden is the state from which Adam and his wife were later brought out, as the Quran recounts, and which the Gospel points forward to being restored through the One who knew no sin.

Illumination note
The chapter closes in quiet innocence. The man and his wife are both naked, and they are not ashamed. There is no covering needed, no hiding, no distance. Openness and trust mark their relationship with one another and with the Creator. The Gospel later shows the sinless One who restores righteousness. The Quran speaks of the moment they were brought out of that original state. Three witnesses stand at the end of the garden narrative: the two are naked and unashamed, the design is complete, and the peace of the original creation is still unbroken.

We have walked from the finishing of the heavens and the earth, through the rest of the seventh day, the forming of the man, the planting of the garden, the two trees, the four rivers, the placing and the command, the naming of the animals, the deep sleep, the building of the woman, the man’s song of recognition, the leaving and cleaving, and finally the naked and unashamed state.
