Chapter Summary
After the events of the previous chapter, the word of YHVH comes to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” Abram expresses his concern that he remains childless and that Eliezer of Damascus, a member of his household, will be his heir. YHVH declares that one who comes from Abram’s own body shall be his heir. He brings Abram outside and tells him to look toward the heavens and number the stars if he is able; so shall his offspring be. Abram believes YHVH, and it is counted to him as righteousness.YHVH identifies Himself as the One who brought Abram out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give him the land. Abram asks how he shall know that he will possess it. YHVH instructs him to bring a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon. Abram cuts the animals in half (except the birds) and lays the pieces opposite each other. Birds of prey come down on the carcasses, and Abram drives them away.As the sun is going down, a deep sleep falls on Abram, and a dreadful and great darkness comes upon him. YHVH reveals that Abram’s offspring will be sojourners in a land not theirs, will be afflicted for four hundred years, and that He will judge the nation that enslaves them; afterward they will come out with great possessions. Abram himself will go to his fathers in peace and be buried in a good old age. His offspring will return in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete. When the sun has gone down and it is dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch pass between the pieces. On that day YHVH makes a covenant with Abram, promising the land from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates, to his offspring, and listing the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaim, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites. The Power of the words of belief, righteousness, the stars, the covenant, and the four hundred years is visible throughout. The three-witness reading shows the same counting of faith as righteousness and the promise of the land and offspring.
What You Will Learn in Genesis 15
- The word of YHVH comes to Abram in a vision: “I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”
- Abram’s concern about being childless and the promise that one from his own body will be his heir.
- The command to look at the stars: “So shall your offspring be.”
- Abram believes YHVH, and it is counted to him as righteousness.
- The cutting of the covenant with the divided animals.
- The deep sleep, the darkness, and the revelation of four hundred years of sojourning and affliction.
- The smoking fire pot and flaming torch that pass between the pieces.
- YHVH’s covenant granting the land from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates.
- The Power of the key words of belief, the stars, the covenant, and the four hundred years, and the three-witness reading of the covenant of faith.
Note on Repeated Witnesses
Certain passages (especially Romans 4:3 and Surah Al-Baqarah 2:124) appear more than once. This is intentional. The chapter itself moves from the vision and the promise of offspring, through the counting of faith as righteousness, into the cutting of the covenant and the revelation of the four hundred years. Repeating the clearest Gospel and Quranic witnesses allows the disciple to see the same truths of faith counted as righteousness and the covenant promise from multiple angles. How to Read This Chapter
Each section is presented with the full English text, the Hebrew with word-by-word Power values and Verse Power, key numeric highlights, a full Gospel parallel, and a full Quranic parallel. The Power remains front and center. Chapter-level notes gather the larger patterns so the individual verses stay clean and focused. All appearances of the Tetragrammaton are rendered as YHVH.
