Chapter Summary
In the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, these four kings make war against the five kings of the Valley of Siddim: Bera of Sodom, Birsha of Gomorrah, Shinab of Admah, Shemeber of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (Zoar). The five kings had served Chedorlaomer for twelve years and rebelled in the thirteenth. In the fourteenth year the four kings defeat the Rephaim, Zuzim, Emim, Horites, Amalekites, and Amorites, then meet the five kings in battle in the Valley of Siddim. The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah flee; some fall into the bitumen pits. The enemy takes all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, along with Lot (Abram’s brother’s son) and his possessions. One who escapes tells Abram the Hebrew. Abram arms 318 trained men born in his house, pursues the captors as far as Dan, divides his forces by night, defeats them, and pursues them to Hobah north of Damascus. He brings back all the goods, Lot, the women, and the people. The king of Sodom meets him in the Valley of Shaveh (the King’s Valley). Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of El Elyon, brings out bread and wine and blesses Abram by El Elyon, Possessor of heaven and earth, who delivered his enemies into his hand. Abram gives him a tenth of everything. The king of Sodom offers Abram the goods and asks only for the persons. Abram refuses, having lifted his hand to YHVH, El Elyon, Possessor of heaven and earth, that he will take nothing—not a thread or a sandal strap—lest anyone say, “I have made Abram rich.” He takes only what the young men have eaten and the share of his allies Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. The Power of the names of the kings, the number 318, the tenth, and the oath to YHVH is visible throughout. The three-witness reading shows the same rescue by faith and the blessing of the priest-king Melchizedek.
What You Will Learn in Genesis 14
- The war of the four kings against the five kings of the Valley of Siddim.
- Twelve years of service and rebellion in the thirteenth year.
- The defeat of the Rephaim, Zuzim, Emim, and others, and the battle in the Valley of Siddim.
- Lot is taken captive; Abram rescues him with 318 trained men.
- Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of El Elyon, blesses Abram and receives a tenth of everything.
- Abram refuses any reward from the king of Sodom, lifting his hand to YHVH, El Elyon, Possessor of heaven and earth.
- The Power of the key names, the number 318, the tenth, and the oath, and the three-witness reading of the rescue and the blessing.
Note on Repeated Witnesses
Certain passages (especially Hebrews 7:1–4 and Surah Al-Anbiya 21:51) appear more than once. This is intentional. The chapter itself moves from the war and the captivity of Lot, through the rescue, into the meeting with Melchizedek and the refusal of reward. Repeating the clearest Gospel and Quranic witnesses allows the disciple to see the same truths of the priest-king’s blessing and Abram’s integrity from multiple angles. How to Read This Chapter
Each section is presented with the full English text, the Hebrew with word-by-word Power values and Verse Power, key numeric highlights, a full Gospel parallel, and a full Quranic parallel. The Power remains front and center. Chapter-level notes gather the larger patterns so the individual verses stay clean and focused. All appearances of the Tetragrammaton are rendered as YHVH.
