Chapter Summary
Genesis 12 begins the story of Abram. YHVH calls him to leave his country, his kindred, and his father’s house and go to the land that He will show him. YHVH promises to make of him a great nation, to bless him, to make his name great, and to bless all the families of the earth through him. Abram obeys. At the age of seventy-five he departs from Haran with Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions. He journeys through the land of Canaan. At Shechem, at the oak of Moreh, YHVH appears to him and promises the land to his offspring. Abram builds an altar there. He moves to the hill country east of Bethel, pitches his tent, builds a second altar, and calls upon the name of YHVH. A severe famine comes upon the land, and Abram goes down to Egypt to sojourn there. Because of Sarai’s beauty he asks her to say she is his sister. The princes of Pharaoh see her and take her into Pharaoh’s house. Pharaoh deals well with Abram for her sake. But YHVH afflicts Pharaoh and his house with great plagues. Pharaoh confronts Abram, returns Sarai, and sends them away with all that they have. The Power of the call, the promise, the altars, and the protection of Sarai is visible throughout. The three-witness reading shows the same obedient going out by faith and the beginning of the covenant line.
What You Will Learn in Genesis 12
- YHVH’s call to Abram to leave country, kindred, and father’s house.
- The promise of a great nation, personal blessing, a great name, and blessing to all the families of the earth.
- Abram’s obedience at age seventy-five and the journey into the land of Canaan.
- The appearance of YHWH at Shechem and the promise of the land to his offspring.
- The building of altars and calling upon the name of YHVH.
- The sojourn in Egypt, the taking of Sarai, the plagues upon Pharaoh, and the return of Sarai.
- The Power of the key words of the call and the promise, and the three-witness reading of the beginning of the covenant with Abram.
Note on Repeated Witnesses
Certain passages (especially Hebrews 11:8–10 and Surah Al-Anbiya 21:51) appear more than once. This is intentional. The chapter itself moves from the call, through the journey and the altars, into the sojourn in Egypt and the protection of Sarai. Repeating the clearest Gospel and Quranic witnesses allows the disciple to see the same truths of obedient faith and the beginning of the covenant line from multiple angles.
